Contact Details:Dr Alberto Fernández Carbajal

I am the holder of a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship based at the School of English, University of Leicester, where I previously worked as Teaching Fellow in Postcolonial Literature, after lecturing at the Universities of Leeds, Edge Hill and York St John. I am consultant for ARIEL (A Review of International English Literature) and am currently the Postgraduate and Early Career Representative for the Postcolonial Studies Association (UK).

Research Interests

My research has tended to challenge well-established critical positions in postcolonial studies (please see my monograph Compromise and Resistance in Postcolonial Writing: E. M. Forster’s Legacy, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2014). From my existing interest in queer dissidence and Muslim perspectives comes my current Leverhulme-funded project, Queer Diasporas: Islam, Homosexuality and a Micropolitics of Dissent. My study will challenge negative views on Islam by constructing queer Muslims as figures at the crossroads claiming the attention and sympathy of Western audiences.
