Mr Martin Rhodes
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Engineering, University of Bath
  • Master's Degree, Aerospace Engineering, Cranfield University
Main Research Interests

My research interests are concurrent engineering, value driven design and designing optimum business solutions. The focus here is on the challenges facing engineers and engineering leaders of the future. Cost and ‘value for money’ pressures continue to grow and the pace of technology development continues to increase. Competitor product benchmarking is becoming a way of life, and exploitation of the new design space enabled by advanced manufacturing methods is becoming a key advantage. I want to develop techniques that engineers can use to design optimum business solutions.

Previous Experience

Prior to joining the University I held a number of senior engineering management roles across a diverse range of complex enterprises. My last industrial role was as Chief Cost Engineer at Rolls-Royce.

Teaching Area

Undergraduate: I teach the second year business simulation and the third year management module.

Postgraduate: I have developed a number of modules for the new Masters in Engineering Management (MEM):

  • Engineering business management
  • Cost / value engineering
  • Lean engineering
  • Project management
