Alan Ponter is an Emeritus Professor at Leicester University. A graduate of Imperial College, University of London he has been a Professor at the University of Leicester since 1978. He was Pro-Vice Chancellor of Leicester University between 1987 and 1991 and also between 1994 and 1997. Previously a Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge he has held Visiting Professorships at Brown University and the University of California Santa Barbara. He is a Consulting Professor at Chongqing University, Peoples Republic of China and a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde.

His expertise lies in structural mechanics, plasticity and computational methods, with particular interests in problems involving high temperatures and in simplified and bounding methods as an aid to design. He has been a member of European Community committees concerned with nuclear design and has sat on many committees and working parties of the UK Science and Engineering research Council and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and various industrial consultative committees. He is a member of the EPSRC Review College.

His research interests include;

  1. Variational and minimum theorems for cyclic loading for complex constitutive  relationships.
  2. Computational methods for Life Assessment methods at high temperature, with applications to power plant and gas turbine components (in co-operation with the University of Strathclyde)
  3. New design methods for surfaces under rolling contact with particular reference to geotechnical materials (in co-operation with the University of Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics )
  4. The behaviour of composites materials and structures subjected to complex loading. This includes the behaviour of metal matrix composites subjected to variable temperature, the behaviour of laminate structures, and the behaviour of materials where micro stresses are induced by temperature variation.

Current  research is carried out with the support of a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship and in cooperation with Professor Alan Cocks of Oxford University, Dr Olga  Barrera of the Henri Tudor research Centre, Luxembourg and Dr Haofeng Chen of the University of Strathclyde and others.
