Bernard Silverman

Chief Scientific Advisor and Director of Science and Research Group at the Home Office


Professor Bernard Silverman joined the Home Office in April 2010 following an academic career as a professor of statistics at a number of universities. His role is to:

  • Provide ministers and officials with independent, impartial advice on all areas of science, social science and statistics.
  • Lead science and research for the department and its agencies.
  • Bring the best external scientific input to the department.
  • Play a key part in the Chief Scientific Adviser network across Whitehall.

He was Master of St Peter’s College, Oxford from 2003 to 2009. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and serves on its Council. He is also immediate Past President of the Royal Statistical Society. His research has ranged widely across theoretical and practical aspects of statistics, including many areas of science, engineering, medicine and social science.

He has a substantial and broad record of work for government, and as a statistical consultant in many areas of industry and commerce including law and finance.
