Guy Rutty

Head of the East Midlands Forensic Pathology Unit, University Hospitals of Leicester


Professor Guy Rutty MBE is Head of the University’s Forensic Pathology Unit and an Honorary Consultant in Histopathology to the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. He has been elected member of Council of the Royal College of Pathologists and Chair of the Forensic Pathology Specialist Advisory Committee and a visiting Fellow of Cranfield University.

Professor Rutty’s principal work relates to the provision of forensic pathology services to HM Coroners and police forces of the East Midlands. He also provides forensic pathology services to other police forces of the United Kingdom as well as opinion work for both prosecution and defence for solicitors and police forces alike. He undertakes research and teaching, undergraduate, postgraduate, medical, and paramedical and manages a Royal College and Home Office approved training centre for Forensic Pathology. Professor Rutty has published over 200 publications including original peer reviewed papers, review articles, editorials, case reports, letters and abstracts as well as editing six autopsy related books with further books in production.

Professor Rutty has been an advisor to both association and governmental bodies in relation to forensic pathology developments and services, including the Policy Advisory Committee of the British Association in Forensic Medicine, the Home Office in relation to contaminated mass fatalities, the Department of Health in relation to forensic and mass fatality radiography and the National Police Improvement Agency Missing Persons Bureau. He is also a member of the Pathology Sub Committee of the Steering Committee for Disaster Victim Identification for Interpol.

In 2008 Professor Rutty received a Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner's Commendation for his work with the European Commission funded exercise, Operation Torch.
