The Bosch Technology Horizons Award, which aims to encourage young people to opt for an engineering career, is now open for entries.  The essay-writing competion offers cash prizes of £700 in the 14-18 age group and £1000 in the 18-24 age group.

This year's competition questions tackle environmental technology and how engineering has helped develop the infrastructure needed to host the London 2012 Olympics.

Last year's winner in the 14-18 age group, Felicity Harer (now a second year aerospace engineering student) used her winnings to travel to China. The research she did for her essay focused on the areas she wanted to study and the modules she would choose for her university course. After her studies, she hopes to pursue a career working in areas relating to sustainability.

I was able to visit some really amazing museums like the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.  They gave me the opportunity to learn more about the path technological development has been taking in China and where they see it heading in the future.  It was really interesting learning more about what key nations in the world economy are focusing on.  I was also able to visit a steel manufacturing plant, which was fascinating because we were able to get much closer to the machinery than would have been possible in Europe, as well as seeing the sheer scale of manufacture involved."
