Pete joined Leicester as visiting Professor of Education in April 2012.  An education leader, teacher, writer and researcher, Pete taught for many years in primary and secondary schools in East London and abroad. He carried out a variety of roles in school improvement, curriculum development and assessment in Essex before becoming Head of School Improvement in the London Borough of Redbridge. He worked with NCSL developing school networks and was director of the Primary National Strategy from 2006 to 2011. He has been responsible for Education in Central Bedfordshire since 2011.

Pete has advised ministers on national policy for improving learning, teaching and school leadership under three Prime Ministers. He has a longstanding interest in teacher professional learning and how it links with improved outcomes for pupils. He introduced Lesson Study into the UK through a research award from the TLRP (2003-9) and he has led and advised large scale Lesson Study developments and research at NCSL, the National Strategies, the University of Exeter and the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland and he is currently adviser to a number of national projects on the use of Lesson Study. He owns the website (LSUK) and is a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies. In 2012 Pete completed his Doctorate at Cambridge University investigating teachers’ discourse to establish how and what teachers learn in LS contexts.

He is Honorary Secretary of the World Association of Lesson Studies and has spoken on Lesson Study and Assessment for Learning in the UK, Japan, the US, Hong Kong, Singapore, Palestine and Chile.

Pete has published widely in the fields of teacher learning, school improvement, school to school support and assessment. He has been a career long action researcher and enquirer.
