I began my career teaching English as a foreign language in France, Japan and the UK, at universities, companies and private language schools. I was a Senior English Instructor and Consultant in Intercultural Communication in Japan's second largest steel company, NKK. I also taught at the British Council, Tokyo. In France, I taught at International House Paris, the University of Paris V and the University Institute of Technology, Paris.

I joined the School of Education at the University of Leicester in 1997. I teach on both the campus-based and distance learning MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL programmes, the MSc Educational Management and Leadership and supervise doctoral research. I am a founder member of the University of Leicester Lesson Study Research Group.

I am co-author of the B1 Pre-Intermediate level of the flagship course book series, Navigate, published by Oxford University Press in 2015. I have given plenaries, professional development talks and run workshops on materials development in the UK and overseas (France, Poland, Turkey, Peru and Colombia).

I am very interested in the development of language teaching materials, particularly with regard to the application of theory to practice (e.g. the way that corpus research on spoken language is influencing methodology and materials development) and the evaluation of language teaching materials. I have presented several conference papers on this topic at IATEFL. I am currently co-editing the Routledge Handbook of Materials Development in Language Teaching.

During my doctoral work, I investigated the performance of Japanese candidates in the Cambridge Speaking Tests.  I have used discourse analysis to explore the relationship between language, culture and identity, specifically the co-construction of identity in speaking tests and media contexts. I also draw upon discourse analysis to analyse teacher interaction in lesson study groups. I am particularly interested in how teachers collaborate and co-construct pedagogical knowledge.

I was a member of the ELT Journal review panel from 2010- 2012. I am now a member of the editorial panel for The European Journal of Applied Linguistics and TEFL and TESOL Thailand.

I was External Examiner for the MLitt in English Language Teaching at the University of St Andrews, Scotland from 2010-2012 and was the External Examiner for the MSc in TESOL (distance learning programmes) at the University of Aston from 2011-2015. I was External Examiner for MA TESOL programmes at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK from 2015-2021.

I am supervising doctoral research on materials development, lesson study, EAP listening, language and identity and intercultural communication. I am interested in supervising in the following areas:

  • language and Identity


My research on Lesson Study was showcased on Gediz TV, Izmir and an article appeared in the local newspaper in June 2015.

My course book, Navigate, was shortlisted for two awards: the English Speaking Union award (2016) and an ELTon for innovation in language teaching (2017).
