After qualifying in 1991, David taught for over twenty years in schools and colleges in Warrington, Leicester and Nottingham, ultimately taking on Head of Department roles in English, Media and Film Studies. He co-wrote (with Jeremy Grant) two well-regarded education textbooks for the British Film Institute: Teaching Auteur Study and Teaching Analysis of Film Language, and contributed a quarter of the entries to the Hodder A-Z of Media and Film Studies.

David's fiction has appeared in various literary magazines. His novel, Finer Things, was published by Sandstone Press in 2019. He is currently writing another.

Before joining Leicester School of Education in 2016, David was Course Director for Creative Writing at the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning. At present, his main responsibility is as a tutor on the English strand of the Secondary PGCE. He also contributes to the work of the Doctoral College, and is open to supervision of PhD projects relating to English teaching, creative writing pedagogy, Lifelong Learning and media education.
