After qualifying in 1991, David taught for over twenty years in schools and colleges in Warrington, Leicester and Nottingham, ultimately taking on Head of Department roles in English, Media and Film Studies. He co-wrote (with Jeremy Grant) two well-regarded education textbooks for the British Film Institute: Teaching Auteur Study and Teaching Analysis of Film Language, and contributed a quarter of the entries to the Hodder A-Z of Media and Film Studies.

David has worked at Leicester School of Education since 2016, before which he was Course Director for Creative Writing at the University’s Centre for Lifelong Learning. At present, his main responsibilities are as a tutor on the English strand of the Secondary PGCE and as Academic Lead for Secondary SCITT programmes. His research interests lie in creative writing pedagogy (particularly narrative forms) and in Lifelong Learning. David is a practising writer whose fiction and poetry have appeared in various literary magazines. His second novel, Finer Things, is due for publication by Sandstone Press in June 2019.
