Accreditation of Prior Learning

Information about applications for approval of Accreditation of Prior Credited Learning (APCL), and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) for the MSc Educational Leadership (distance learning)

This information is for applicants who have received an offer for the MSc Educational Leadership programme.

Accreditation of Certificated Prior Learning (APCL)

If you have Masters-level (level 7) credits which you wish to be considered for exemption against modules in this programme please complete the APL application form found here and email it directly to css-dl@le.ac.uk.

Please note that APCL can not be considered before a formal offer on the MSc Educational Leadership programme is made.

Application Process for Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

If you wish to be considered for exemption against modules in this programme please see the following information about the application process of Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Your responses to the following tasks are required to determine your case for exemption against some components within the MSc Educational Leadership. These tasks are needed to support your application for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning. Continue with this application if you do not want Masters-level accredited study to be considered but feel that you have professional experience that is equivalent to meeting the intended learning outcomes of 30 or 60 credit modules on this programme. The 30 credit modules for which APEL is possible to consider for this programme are:

  • Educational Leadership, Learning and Change (ELLC)
  • External Influences on Educational Leadership (EIEL)

We recommend that you allow 4-6 weeks to prepare these tasks depending on whether credit exemption is being sought for 1 or 2 x 30 credit modules.

There are 3 tasks to complete for each 30 credit exemption.

Which tasks do I need to complete?

All applications you must complete Task 1

For 30 credits APEL complete either:

Option 1 - to be considered for exemption from Educational Leadership, Learning and Change complete

  • 2a ELLC
  • 3a ELLC

OR

Option 2 - to be considered for exemption from External Influences on Educational Leadership

  • 2b EIEL
  • 3b EIEL

For 60 credits APEL complete tasks BOTH 2 and 3

  • 2a ELLC
  • 2b EIEL
  • 3a ELLC
  • 3b EIEL

How to Apply for APEL

Please note that APEL can not be considered before a formal offer on the MSc Educational Leadership programme is made.

In order to specifically apply for APEL you must complete the following two tasks:

  1. APEL application form found here
  2. Complete the task for application listed above

Please submit these, along with any supplementary material (such as programmes of study and scanned copies of certificates from courses) to MSc Educational Leadership email: css-dl@le.ac.uk.

Full applications should be received at least 4 weeks prior to the main application deadline for the programme for which you have applied. This period will be used to review your application and you will be contacted should any further information be required by the reviewers. You will be notified of the decision on the outcome of your application (pass/fail) usually 1 week prior to the application deadline.

If APL is accepted you will be exempt from either 30 or 60 credits. As a result a new offer letter will be sent to you with a revised fee.

Please note that if your APL application is not accepted your original offer will stand. You will however not be permitted to reapply for APL.
