Probation Review for Research Students on PhD, MD, PsyD, and MPhil Programmes

Research students on PhD, MD, PsyD, or MPhil programmes are registered on probation for the first part of their degree. To continue with their research degree these students must successfully complete a probation review.

The probation period for research students on MD, PsyD, or full-time PhD or MPhil programmes is one year; for research students on part-time PhD or MPhil programmes the probation period is two years.

The Adobe Acrobat (PDF) Guidance for Probation Review Panels is designed to be printed for reference by staff during the probation review process.

The process is summarised in the illustrations below. Please note that the timings are suggestions only - the probation review must be completed before the end of the probation period, but Departments may schedule individual stages as appropriate for departmental needs.

Academic Concerns Between Initial Registration and Probation Review

The supervisory team should not wait until the probation review if they have serious doubts about the student’s progress or ability to achieve the degree for which they are registered.

In these cases, supervisory teams should consult the advice on neglect of academic obligations.
