BiographyStephanie Orswell

Stephanie is a full-time PhD student in the Department of Criminology at the University of Leicester. Prior to this, Stephanie completed a BA in Psychology at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, an MSc In Developmental Psychopathology from Durham University, and an MSc in Crime, Justice, and Psychology at the University of Leicester.

Between her master’s degrees, Stephanie worked as a counsellor at a state prison in Massachusetts, where her primary duty was to facilitate group intervention programmes, but was also involved with other areas of inmate management regarding treatment participation. It was through working at the prison that she decided to make the shift over to Criminology as well as develop the idea for her PhD research.

PhD Research

Stephanie is supervised by Dr Isla Masson and Dr Sam King, researching the experiences of inmates with learning disabilities and difficulties in regard to behavioural intervention programmes. Her research will not only consider the inmates themselves, but will also acknowledge the programme facilitators and officers who interact with these inmates. This project aims to highlight the challenges faced by prison staff who work with inmates who have learning disabilities and difficulties as well as how effective these programmes are for these inmates based on their own experiences.
