Personal details

I joined University of Leicester as a Lecturer in Criminology in May 2018, having previously held posts at Liverpool John Moores University and Nottingham Trent University. I have a first-class BA (Hons) Sociology from Lancaster University and an MSc Clinical Criminology from the University of Leicester. I was awarded my PhD in 2018, my thesis examined police officers’ understandings and experience of leadership. During my PhD, I chaired the British Society of Criminology’s Postgraduate Committee and sat on the Executive Committee of the Society. I have extensive experience of research and teaching in policing. Prior to beginning my PhD, I held research positions at The Police Foundation, the criminal justice consultancy, Morgan Harris Burrows, and the Home Office Regional Research Team in the East Midlands. I am currently an Associate Inspector for Leadership with HMICFRS, Academic Advisor on the College of Policing’s National First Line Supervision Guideline Committee, and Book Review Editor for Policing & Society.

Research

Claire is currently working on a long term ethnographic study of police discretion with colleagues at the University of Liverpool and University of Manchester as part of the Police Ethnography Research Collaboration.
