Amy Clarke is a Teaching Fellow in Criminology and National Teaching Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Amy has been a member of the School since 2010. First as a student, undertaking the BA Criminology degree and then the MSc Applied Criminology programme, and later as an academic member of staff. Following her Master’s degree, Amy went on to begin her doctoral research which focuses on the ‘hidden’ racism, discrimination and targeted hostility experienced by new migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in Leicester. To conduct this research, Amy engaged with close to 150 new arrivals through qualitative, ethnographic methods to develop existing understandings of hate crime victimisation and the impacts of targeted hostility, and demonstrates how this hostile environment creates significant barriers to the integration of new arrivals into wider British society.

Amy supports the teaching of modules predominantly at undergraduate level and is responsible for the delivery of workshops and seminars. She also supervises undergraduate dissertation students on a variety of topics. One of Amy’s main aims is to enhance the student experience by creating more inclusive and representative approaches to teaching that supports the learning of all students from diverse backgrounds. She regularly works alongside colleagues within the University and externally around the issues of BAME attainment, a subject she is passionate about. Encouraging students to engage critically with the world around them whilst developing key academic skills and building student confidence are central to Amy’s approach to teaching.
