Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit

The University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust have been awarded £6.5 million from 2012-2017 for a Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) in Cardiovascular Disease by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This is a continuation of funding initially awarded in 2009. Additonal funding of £1.04 million has also been awarded to the Unit for its participation in the NIHR BioResource, a database of volunteers who are willing to be approached to participate in other studies. Leicester Cardiovascular BRU is one of 20 units in England whose mission is to enable the rapid translation of clinical discoveries into clinical practice, ‘from bench to bedside’.

The two main themes of the BRU are:

  • Cardiovascular Genetics and Biomarkers
  • Novel Cardiovascular Interventions
