Research

Research Interests: The mechanism, diagnosis and intervention of acute and chronic renal injury including both native and transplanted kidneys, with focuses and expertise on cell injury (apoptosis and necrosis, inflammation, and innate and adaptive immunity) and repair (remodelling and fibrosis), detailed as follows:

  • Isolated organ perfusion system: Validated and further evaluated the effects of different kidney preservations/interventions including erythropoietin (EPO) and caspase-3 siRNA.
  • Gene profiling: defined and validated potential biomarkers such as SERPINA3, SLP1 and FTCD in human transplanted renal biopsy, cultured cell and animal kidney samples.
  • Specific gene therapy: Performed a series of investigations using synthetic caspase-3 siRNA in cultured cells, isolated kidneys and auto-transplantation porcine models.
  • Renoprotection of EPO & its derivatives: Assessed the effects and underlying mechanisms of helix B surface peptide (HBSP) and cyclic HBSP (CHBP) in kidney injury models.

  • Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University: as a Visiting Professor obtained joint grants from Department for Business Innovation & Skills in UK, and Fudan University; co supervised PhD students; helped to establish the Leicester-Zhongshan Sister Transplant Centre, supported by The Transplantation Society; and published research papers with joint names.

 

Research Supervision

PhD supervision interests:

  • Disease models: Defining the mechanisms of ischemia reperfusion injury and/or sepsis-induced AKI using culture cells and animal models focusing on apoptosis, inflammation and phagocytosis associated with properdin and EPOR or EPOR/β common receptor (βcR).
  • Biomarkers: Exploring the gene profile in transplant renal biopsy, blood and urine samples of AKI patients as well as cell and animal samples, selecting and validating potential biomarkers for diagnosis and intervention.
  • Interventions: Designing and evaluating siRNA delivery system to achieve timely and cell-specific intervention by HBSP (ligand of EPOR/βcR) conjugation and guiding by highly expressed EPOR/βcR in injured kidney cells.
