Research Fellowship: P wave analysis Comparison between Cryoballoon ablation and Radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

 

Research:

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and an important risk factor for stroke.

It is usually treated by medications but in recent years, Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) arose as an important treatment method especially for Paroxysmal AF (less than 7 days of presentation).

We are trying to compare the 2 techniques used for PVI (Cryoballoon ablation and Radiofrequency ablation) through analysis of P wave diameters in the ECG. The P wave is the first wave in the ECG and represents depolarization of the atrium.

Furthermore, P wave analysis in such patients may predict recurrence and failure of the procedure and may dictate which procedure of the two is more suitable for such patients.

We will try to compare waves as well in patients who had body surface mapping in order to get the most accurate results.

Prof G Andre Ng has been working on AF projects for years in order to figure out the best ways to treat each type of AF whether it is paroxysmal AF or persistent AF.

We are hoping that this project can demonstrate how much the P wave can guide through the procedure selection and predict the outcome of the procedure which can be vital for AF treatment in the future.
