Congratulations to Will Hunt, who has won the Young Investigator Award at the British and Irish Hypertension Society annual meeting in Glasgow. Will, who completed his iBSc with the Department last year supervised by Prof Gerry McCann and Dr Thomas Yates (Diabetes Research Centre), presented the group's work on the role of arterial stiffness in cardiac remodelling in younger adults with T2DM. His prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to the Australian Hypertension Society meeting in spring 2018 where he gets the opportunity to present again. September 2017
Jonathan Thompson has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Anaesthesia Education; the official CPED journal of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, the Faculty of Pain Medicine, the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland and the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists, with a worldwide reputation and readership. Laurence Dawkins-Hall has been successful in his application for Registered Scientist status with the UK Science Council. This award is appropriate for staff in scientific and senior technical roles, and is intended to ensure high and improving standards across all scientific disciplines, reflect best practice in science and set a benchmark level throughout the science-based professions. Congratulations to the 2017 student prize winners! The Very Reverend Derek Hole Prize in Cardiovascular Medicine has been awarded to two candidates as both were deemed to be worthy winners: Maryum Farooq and Niraj Samani. The Freda Redford Prize in Cardiovascular Science has been awarded to Lauren Coles. July 2017

Jatinder Minhas has been selected as one of only two stroke medicine trainees from the UK to attend the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) Summer School in Larissa, Greece on 10th to 15th September 2017. For the last 20 years, the Stroke Summer School has been a flagship event for the ESO and a prestigious educational meeting for stroke trainees throughout Europe. May 2017

Daphne Jackson Fellowship Opportunity
Applications are invited for a two year Daphne Jackson Fellowship that will be hosted by the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester, and sponsored by the van Geest Heart and Cardiovascular Research Fund. The fellowship is intended for individuals who want to return to research in any STEM subject covered by the department.

Liam Heaney has been selected to present his work at the House of Commons on Monday 13th March as part of the STEM for Britain 2017 event. This competition allows early career researchers to showcase their research to members of parliament as part of the government’s STEM initiative. Liam has been selected to compete in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences session, presenting his poster on the metabolomics work completed under the supervision of Prof Suzuki (notably work completed on the cardiovascular disease biomarker trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO). Matthew Charlton has been awarded £2,312 from the Ernest Leach Fund (small grant from the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) for his project "Establishing normal ranges of microcirculatory function as determined by CytoCam-IDF imaging." Jan 2017

David Sidlofff won the Sol Cohen Prize at the UK Vascular Society Meeting (best clinical paper) in November for his talk on "Social Deprivation, screening attendance and mortality." Jan 2017

Alison Goodall won the University of Leicester Enterprise Award which was one of the first ever Discovering Excellence Awards to recognise the talents and commitment of staff across the university. Dec 2017

Razif Abas and Meetal Solanki won the Biotechnology Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (Biotechnology YES) regional heat (as part of a team) and will be competing at the national final in London in December. (This competition is funded by The University of Nottingham’s Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HGI), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) and aims to encourage an entrepreneurial culture for the benefit of the UK economy.

Dimitra Aravani won the first poster prize (among postdocs) of the British Society for Cell Biology at the joint BSCB/BSDB spring meeting in Warwick 10-13 of April 2016. Dimitra has also been selected as one of five finalists for the Young Investigator Prize of the British Cardiovascular Society, to give a talk at the meeting in Manchester 6-8 of June 2016.

Ana Verissimo received a Nuffield Research Placement Certificate for being a "great mentor" to a 17 year old female placement student in the laboratory.  The student undertook a mini project and learnt about different careers within medicine and biomedical sciences. Oct 2015
