Departmental and University Facilities

Research Facilities

The Department has excellent laboratory, clinical and office facilities at Glenfield Hospital, the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Henry Wellcome Building at the University of Leicester. At Glenfield Hospital these include a recently opened £12.5m Cardiovascular Research Centre. The CRC provides an additional 2,200m2 facility including a biobank capable of storing samples from up to 100,000 individuals, a clinical research informatics unit and a data to knowledge unit, which together will capture, code and translate anonymous patient data for research and will accommodate an advanced IT link between the University and hospital.

Campus and Hospital Facilities

Library: a modern library is situated on main campus with direct electronic links to all sites for downloading a wide range of material.

Catering: there are a number of outlets on all sites such as cafés, restaurants and shops.

Sport and Recreation: a full state of the art gym and swimming pool are available on the main campus, with additional sporting facilities at Manor Road in Oadby.

Chapels and prayer rooms for use by people of any faith or none are available on main campus in the Charles Wilson building and in the Leicester Hospitals and can be used by CVS staff and students.

Childcare: the University of Leicester Nursery, at main campus, caters for children aged from six weeks to five years and is open to all University of Leicester staff and students (subject to the availability of places). The nursery is registered with, and inspected by, OFSTED and delivers the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum framework. There are separate and shared facilities for babies (under two years) and children (over two years).

The University of Leicester offers childcare vouchers through an external provider, Computershare Voucher Services. Childcare vouchers are an employee benefit available to all eligible working parents and can be used to pay for many types of registered childcare including out of school clubs and holiday schemes, for children up to 16 years old.

Facilities for nursing mothers: on the main University campus there is a breastfeeding/milk expressing room available to staff and students.

Travel and Parking

Rail: the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the University campus are both within easy walking distance of Leicester train station.

Buses: Leicester is also well served by a network of bus routes, including the Hospital Hopper which is free to all University of Leicester staff and students. The Hospital Hopper connects Leicester General Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester station and Glenfield Hospital. The University campus is a 5-10 minute walk from the LRI stop.

Cycling: University staff have the opportunity to obtain tax-free bikes for work, using Cyclescheme. There are also a number of secure cycle storage locations and showers available.

Parking: as with all University and hospital sites, parking at each of the Department’s locations is severely limited. Parking permits for staff are applied for annually, and allocated by strict eligibility criteria. The Department has many more staff than there are permits available, and when considering joining the Department, you should investigate other transport options or the costs of hospital pay and display parking. Students are not eligible for parking permits.
