Professor Mellor’s role is developing a focus on governance scholarship and research with particular emphasis on the financial sector. The role includes supervision of Ph.D research and taking a lead in executive education in governance.

Biography

Professor Mellor is a former international corporate banker with over 20 years’ experience in banking and finance, principally with Citibank/Citigroup, where he was a vice president and head of international corporate banking teams and chief of staff for Citibank’s Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa. From the time of the Cadbury Report on Corporate Governance in 1992 he has become a recognised authority on governance through roles in management consultancy as a director of the UK Partnership of IIC (International Independent Consultants) and head of the board governance practice, and later in executive education as founder and director of the Non-Executive Directors’ Forum, in association with the University of Exeter with sponsorship from NatWest Bank. In 2008 he founded and is chairman of FGRE (Foundation for Governance Research and Education), a charitable trust. Operating through an Advisory Council of senior and influential persons from the business, financial and public sectors, FGRE’s mission is thought leadership in governance. FGRE is a partner organisation of the University on funding applications, providing advice on research project design and implementation and dissemination to support impact outside academia.

His extensive business and governance experience provides a wide range of connections at board level, particularly amongst major global financial institutions, in the City, and with regulators and government.

Professor Mellor has previously held positions as visiting lecturer on banking governance at BPP University College, NatWest Visiting Senior Fellow in Corporate Leadership at the University of Exeter, and Visiting Professor of Corporate Governance at Bristol Business School. He is a graduate of the University of Exeter (BSc), a PhD from the University of Bristol (both in chemistry), and a Cranfield School of Management MBA.

Research

Professor Mellor’s primary research interest is in the governance and culture of financial institutions, exploring the links with ownership, business models, historical developmentand attitude to risk, and with regulation.
