Dr Shireen Kanji on Woman's Hour

Dr Shireen KanjiThis morning, Dr Shireen Kanji of the Centre for Sustainable Work and Employment Futures spoke in a discussion on the domestic division of labour on Radio 4's Woman's Hour.

Dr Kanji argued that while the domestic division of labour appears to be a private matter between couples, it matters because at a societal level it contributes to women's lesser representation in the higher levels of politics and business. Caring work matters but should not be by default the work of women. Men stand to benefit from sharing in domestic work, through less conflict over housework, better relationships with their partners and greater involvement in their children's lives (if they have children). Conflict over housework is related to depression, lower relationship quality and stress.
