Lachlan grew up and studied in Australia and graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1998. Following a move to the UK Lachlan has worked in local government, the civil service and private sector, predominantly in the employment and skills field. Lachlan studied for his MSc in Urban and Regional Studies at the University of Birmingham. Lachlan joined the School of Management in October 2013, transferring from University of Warwick, and is undertaking his doctoral research on a part time basis.


Lachlan is a member of the British Sociological Association.



Interested in education to work transitions, identity, the role of work in people’s lives, unemployment, careers and narrative research.

Lachlan is currently undertaking a longitudinal study examining graduates’ early labour market experiences in the UK. The study explores how the graduates build their biographical and career narratives and how their experiences impact on their identity. The nature of the study is designed to draw out the role and impact of 'fateful moments' in a key education to work transition."
