Personal details

I read sociology with psychology. My books include 'A Sociology of Commercial Flight Crew' (Ashgate), 'How Pilots Live' (Peter Lang International Publishing), 'Aviation Safety and Security - the importance of teamwork, leadership, creative thinking and active learning' (Libri Publishing) and 'Innovative Thinking in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management' (Gower Publishing). My in vivo research has seen me spend 1,500 hours observing pilots on the flight-decks of A300s, A319s, A320s, A321s, B737s and B757s, and 200 hours on the ramp observing aircraft turnarounds. I am an Associate Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a Member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (Air Safety Group). I also pilot gliders.
