Personal details

I (MSc, PhD, FHEA) joined the University of Leicester in October 2013. I am associate professor at the School of Business. I am director of the Centre for Quantum Social and Cognitive Science (IQSCS). In different periods between 2014 and 2018 I was invited as visiting professor at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). In March 2017, I obtained the Italian scientific qualification for the position of (Full) Professor. I am also Deputy Director of Internationalization and Director of PGT Finance Programmes at the School of Business.

I am managing editor of the Springer-Nature A1 journal Foundations of Science. I am peer-reviewer for the US-Israel Bi-national Science Foundation (BSF), the Economic & Social Science Research Council (ESRC), the Leverhulme Trust Fund, the EU COST Actions and the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR). I am also reviewer for several A1 journals and official reviewer for the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

I am author or co-author of more than 90 contributions, including numerous articles in A1 high impact and top journals. I organized various international conferences and series of seminars, presented more than 60 communications at international events, and was invited to give lectures in UK (Oxford), US, Canada, Europe, Russia, China and NZ. I am co-author of the volume “The Foundations of Quantum Mechanics: Historical Analysis and Open Questions” (World Scientific, 2006). In 2013, I was conferred an “Outstanding Scholarly Contribution Award” by the International Institute for Advanced Studies in Systems Research and Cybernetics for my research. I also received two “Superstar Award” in 2016 and 2018 by the Students' Union for my teaching.

I am guest editor of 6 special issues, including the special issues Quantum Probability Theory and its Economic Applications of the “Journal of Mathematical Economics”, Quantum Probability and Contextuality in Psychology and Economics of the “Journal of Mathematical Psychology”, and Quantum Structures in Computer Science: Language, Semantics, Retrieval of the journal “Theoretical Computer Science”. I am also guest editor of the research topic Quantum Structures in Cognitive and Social Science of the journal “Frontiers in Psychology”.

I am secretary of the US-based International Quantum Structures Association (IQSA). As a member of its executive committee, I participate in the administrative and financial management of IQSA. Within the activities of IQSCS, I organized the Biennial Conference on Quantum Structures, which took place in Leicester, July 11-15, 2016, whose special issue was published in the “International Journal of Theoretical Physics”, with guest editors E. Haven and S. Sozzo. I also organized, with A. Brandenburger (Stern School of Business, New York University), E. Haven (University of Leicester), A. Khrennikov (Linnaeus University), C. Ma (Fudan University), and M. Machina (University of California, San Diego), the Fudan-New York-Leicester Symposium on Quantum Probability and Its Applications in Economics, Leicester, 3-4 July, 2017.

I am investigator in the Consortium “QUARTZ” (Quantum information Access and Retrieval Theory), involving seven institutions, which was funded by the EU Marie Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) to train 13 Early Stage Researchers. In 2013 I co-organized the grant-based series of seminars Parallel Convergences on the mutual relationships between academic and industrial world.

Research Interests

My research interests are truly interdisciplinary and mainly concern the interface of natural and social sciences. I have provided substantial and pioneering contributions in the development of novel mathematical models in cognitive psychology, with relevant applications in decision-making under uncertainty, economics and finance.


I have successfully completed supervision of UG, PG and PhD students, including joint supervisions at the Universities of British Columbia UBC, Brussels VUB and Ghent. Research themes for PhD dissertations include:
