Personal details

I am the University of Leicester Professor of Philosophy of Organisation and Managing Editor of The Sociological Review.

I spent five years with London bankers Coutts & Co, before undertaking doctoral training in philosophy at Edinburgh University, where I later taught Epistemology and Philosophy of Science on the inaugural ESRC doctoral programme.

My field studies of power and ethos in several leading institutions were at the forefront of the cultural turn and reflect his debt to leading anthropologists, while my courses on sociology and poststructuralism draw on a life-long commitment to continental philosophy.

Articulating key ideas on disposal, motility and relational extension during ten years as Director of the Centre for Social Theory and Technology at Keele University, I have published path-breaking work on

  • accounts
  • affect
  • belonging
  • cultural performance
  • dwelling

  • power

Administrative responsibilities

Chair, Steering Group, Social Worlds in 100 objects, College of Social Science.

Doctoral supervision coves a wide range of topics, both philosophical (American pragmatism to deconstruction) and cultural (institutional ethos to eating habits).
