Personal details

I am a globally recognised expert on digitalisation and resultant changes to workplaces/spaces and working conditions. I have given over 20 keynote talks in over 7 countries about the current context of and probable futures for work and workers given technological advancements. I have published several research agenda and policy impacting reports for several elite organisations where I systematically unveil the possible risks and benefits of digital work’s future, focussing on artificial intelligence, data privacy and protection, wearable technologies, platform work and safety and health.

I have appeared in, and my research cited in several media outlets including BBC World Service, BBC Radio 4, Financial Times, The Atlantic,  WIRED, Biz Tech, Business Investors Daily, and more. See some of these stories here.

2020 - 2022 Mapping Identities for Data Explainability (MAIDEN) (PI Genovefa Kefalidou) Tiger Team

2018 – 2020 Leicester Artificial Intelligence Network (LAIN) (PI) Network Grant from Leicester Institute for Advanced Studies to run several networking events and research workshops. (With Julie Chen, Mohammad Mousavi, Alistair McEwan)

2015 - 2017 British Academy/Leverhulme Grant (PI) to research the use of self-tracking health devices in companies.

-This project was entitled ‘Agility, Work and the Quantified Self’. I carried out field work over the course of the first year of the project with a company in Rotterdam that ran a Quantified Workplace project. I also visited a car factory and a technology centre to interview workers, trade unionists and managers and integrated findings into publications.

-Outputs include two published two articles (Employee Relations; Body & Society), one edited book (Palgrave Dynamics of Virtual Work series) and one published monograph (Jan 2018) that contain findings and writings over the course of the project.

EU-OSHA: I have been awarded funding from European Safety and Health Agency (EU-OSHA) for the project entitled Advanced Robotics and AI-based Systems for Automation of Tasks and OSH. The project lasts from Sep 2020 - July 2023 [and is headed by the German Federal Institute for Safety and Health (baUa)]. Research involves interviewing fieldwork, literature review, and case studies which inform a series of Policy Briefs and Reports on these topics. I am heading the sections on AI based systems and so will be looking at predominantly at support for cognitive tasks where no physical handling of objects or persons is required, and modern information and communications technologies (ICT) are often deployed.

STOA European Parliament: I was selected and commissioned by the European Parliament Future of Science & Technology Office (STOA) to research topics for and write the large report Data subjects, digital surveillance, AI and the future of work. The project was managed by the Scientific Foresight Unit of the Directorate for Impact Assessment and European Added Value, within the Directorate-General for Parliamentary Research Services (EPRS), of the Secretariat of the European Parliament. EU-OSHA: I was selected and commissioned to research on topics for and to write Moore, P. (2019) OSH and the Future of Work: Benefits & Risks of Artificial Intelligence tools in workplaces for the European Safety and Health Agency (EU-OSHA). This article discusses the potential implications of using digital developments, like artificial intelligence and ‘big data’, for OSH at the workplace. While it is clear that digital developments will change the way we work significantly, the question remains how this will impact on wellbeing, safety and health at the workplace. The article provides examples of how AI is being used in workplaces, such as for people analytics and recruitment procedures in human resources; for AI-augmented robotics; chat-bots in support centres; or wearable technologies in a production assembly line.

UN ILO: I was the invited expert to the research working group and commissioned to write Moore, P. (2018) The Threat of Physical and Psychosocial Violence & Harassment in Digitalized Work for The United Nations’ International Labour Organisation (ILO) ACTRAV. This commissioned report informed Labour Standard C190: The Threat of Physical and Psychosocial Violence & Harassment in Digitalized Work. The new Standard, now in place, focusses on the risks of violence and harassment against workers, in both traditional and digitalized workplaces.

UN OHCHR: I was the invited expert with knowledge about women working in STEM and ICT, to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)’s Europe Regional Consultation: Women’s Human Rights in the changing world of Work consultation, convened by the Working Group on the issue of discrimination against women in law and practice, on the occasion of its 25th session, Geneva, 13 June 2019 10:00am – 18:00pm. Weizenbaum Institute: 2018-19, I carried out a prestigious Research Fellowship at the Weizenbaum Institute, linked with the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre focussing on topics do with AI, digitalisation and work. Outputs include a recorded Weizenbaum Fellow lecture on ‘The Search for (Artificial) Intelligence in Work Design History’; one AI and Work report for EU-OSHA and an essay on the ‘Quantified Workplace’ for the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) Field Guide to the Future of Work.

Past work: I have been writing about work and worker struggle since 1997 when I lived in South Korea during the East Asian economic crisis, and my research highlights specific pressures workers face in contemporary and historical context. My current research looks at the impact of technology on work from a critical perspective, looking at quantification through wearable tracking and algorithmic decision-making as a set of management techniques where control and resistance emerge as well as new risks of psychosocial and physical violence (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). My previous work looked at the role of trade unions in international development and poverty policy in relation to International Labour Organization’s multilateral relationships (2014); subjectivity and the radical potentials of non-proprietary peer to peer production linking workers across virtual spaces (2009, 2011); and the globalization of worker education from a neo-Gramscian perspective where hegemony is not yet solidified, evidenced through consistent worker uprisings internationally (2005, 2006, 2007).

  • Empirical categories: technology in workplaces and workspaces, including wearable tracking technologies and workplace surveillance in human resource processes including algorithmic decision-making, electronic performance monitoring, automation, and people analytics; artificial intelligence (AI) augmented systems, tools and applications in the workplace; platform/gig work and crowdsourcing; risks and possible benefits workers face in these contexts for occupational safety and health (OSH); psychosocial and physical violence and harassment.

Research and Innovation Funding (since 2004)

2016 New Materialisms III (PI) This was the third workshop funding of a seminar series I initiated, commissioned and organised or co-organised at Universities of Westminster and Kingston (at St Martins) and Middlesex University. I designed this seminar series to capture debates in ‘new materialism’ that are happening in Marxist, feminist, and poststructuralist spheres.

2014 Nov Sustainable Societies Network EPSRC (PI) Development Grant award for my interventions on the Quantified Self entitled ‘Unintended Consequences and the Dark Side of the Quantified Self’. (also in ‘commissioned work’ below)

2014 Nov University of Middlesex Sandpit Grant (PI) for my project ‘The Quantified Self at Work’.

-I used this grant to attend the Quantified Self Expo in San Francisco, California where I ran a breakaway session entitled ‘The Quantified Self at Work’ with the data analyst on my BA/Leverhulme project Joost Plattel. I also conducted interviews there for my book and articles.
