Prior to joining the former Centre for Labour Market Studies in 2011, I worked as a Research Fellow at Warwick Business School. I have a BEd from Queen’s University of Belfast and an MA in Organisation Studies from the University of Warwick. I am currently completing a PhD at the University of Leicester.

Research

I am interested in understanding the emergence of institutions which are claimed to increase the ecological and/or social sustainability of capitalist systems (e.g. CSR, fair-trade, Ethical Trading Initiative, Social Stock Exchange, social venture capitalism, philanthro-capitalism, social entrepreneurship, social enterprise, social innovation projects, micro-finance and so on). My specific interest is in examining the uses of language (or social-symbolic work) of the various actors involved as they seek to advance their interests, within the constraints of their context, while at the same time shaping the form of the emerging the institution. I am also interested in the discord and/or solidarity between diverse actors (large corporations, private foundations, think tanks, business school academics, policy consultants, state agencies, trade associations, pressure groups, international NGOs, political parties, trade unions, etc) in forming the ideas and terminology which underpin these institution, and how they change over time.
