Personal details

BA, MSc, PhD (Leicester)

I studied politics at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Leicester before moving on to do a PhD in Regional Development. My PhD research examined the regional policies established by the Labour Governments of 1997-2010 and their effectiveness in the East Midlands. I was appointed a Lecturer in Regional Development in the School in 2012.

Teaching

I am on study leave for the 2018/19 academic year.

Research

My research interests focus on regional development and public policy, especially in the context of devolution to the regional and local tiers in England. I am particularly interested in the ways in which second tier cities (broadly defined) experience the devolution process and how the public and private sectors come together to form governance networks. I have developed work examining devolution and governance through the lens of Social Contract Theory and this work has been funded in part by a grant from the Regional Studies Association.

I also work with colleagues on the use of cultural and creative industries in economic development. Together with Dr Marta Gasparin I have undertaken a project for the British Council mapping the cultural and creative industries in Vietnam.

Supervision

I am keen to supervise doctoral students’ work in the areas connected to my PhD research:

  • regional policy
  • economic development
  • public administration/policy
    governance
