On 5 June, 25 University of Leicester students travelled to London to attend the ‘Inspiring Women into Fintech’ event in the unique setting of 10x Future Technologies and Virgin Money offices near Victoria Station. Female students from the School of Business and across the University heard women working at 10x and Virgin Money explain how they have established professional careers in the financial technology sector, known as fintech. Students were also offered the chance to ask questions and network as part of an inspirational trip.

The day included Founder & Executive Chairman of 10x Future Technologies Antony Jenkins explaining the evolution of 10x and how they are creating the banking platform of the future. The company, comprising financial services experts, technologists and creatives, is called 10x because they aspire to offer a banking solution 10 times better than traditional services. They aim for their service to be more diverse, open and fair, and challenge industry norms by empowering their partners to build products with clear benefit to people and society.

Attendees also heard from Amanda Jenkins (University of Leicester alumna) who shared her journey to becoming 10x’s Chief Impact Officer, and welcomed students to ask plenty of questions throughout the event. Speaking about the event, she said: “I and the whole 10x team were so impressed with the young women who travelled down to London. Their energy and commitment to their future careers was inspirational and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day. From a personal standpoint, it was wonderful to hear how the University of Leicester has expanded and improved their facilities since I graduated way back in 1982, and all of us at 10x hope to establish a long and fruitful relationship with the University of Leicester School of Business going forward.

“In the meantime, we wish all the finalists that we met yesterday the very best of luck in all their future endeavours!”

A wide range of experts from varying disciplines at Virgin Money (including artificial intelligence, coding and communications and marketing) also joined 10x staff for a panel discussion with the students. The panel shared their fintech career stories and had an open discussion with the students on the topical issues and challenges 10x and emerging fintech start-ups are facing. The students were then able to ask questions about applying for jobs in fintech, learning what they need to do alongside their degree to make them stand out. A key take home was that they need to show an affinity for new technology.

Toni Oluseye, 1st Year Accounting and Finance student, noted: “The event was very helpful in allowing me to build my professional network. I also found the day to be inspiring as seeing women with such high job roles motivated me greatly.”

Kat Singh, 2nd year History student said: “Attending the 10x event in London provided me with a useful insight into the professional environment of a SME, as well as making me more aware of the rapidly growing significance of technology in all areas of commerce. The career advice we were given by the CEO and other 10x employees was also fantastic and made the experience all the more rewarding.”

Jane Howie, Career Development Manager at ULSB, added: “The Inspiring Women into Fintech event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain insight into the range of careers and opportunities within an emerging financial services sector as well as hear motivational stories from a range of professionals who had already established their career in fintech.

“We’d like to extend our thanks to Amanda and Antony as well as Neill Watson, Head of Content & Partnerships at Virgin Money and University of Leicester alumnus, for their help hosting this incredible opportunity for our students and we look forward to working closely with them again in the future.”
