Context

These projects focus on the many new learning and mobile technologies available.

Most such technologies - smartphones, iPods and iPads, GPS etc. - have not been specifically developed for learning, but are becoming widespread for entertainment, business and communication.

They need a good understanding of potential educational applications to be successful for teaching and learning. New technologies can be appropriated for use on- and off- campus, whether fixed to one location, portable or on the move.

Environment

These projects research and develop student-facing pedagogies with technologies not originally intended for learning.

Most of the newer widely used technologies such as smartphones, iPods and iPads, and global positioning systems (GPS) applications have not been developed for learning and need a good understanding of potential teaching applications to be successful in new contexts.

These technologies are currently considered peripheral. Some, however, may become core in the near future.

New technologies are appropriate for off-campus use, as combinations and blends, for dynamic delivery of content and for human intervention and support of learning.

Many of these technologies can be channelled through the VLE but are not limited by the obvious VLE operations.

Small-scale pilots are being undertaken that focus on the changing nature of pedagogy, rather than rampantly developing more and more technological features.
