Follow the Sun 2012 will be using Collaborate(TM) - kindly provided by sponsors Blackboard - as its synchronous conference platform.
One significant advantage of Collaborate (formerly Elluminate Live!) is the ability for each delegate to set his or her connection speed. Collaborate will then adjust the data pushed to the delegate accordingly.
For example, if a delegate has low bandwidth (e.g. a 33.6 Kps dial-up connection rather than Cable/DSL broadband), then Collaborate will decide that there isn't enough bandwidth to display a video, but will still allow the delegate to engage synchronously with the chat box or view the slides.
The ability to choose a suitable connection speed acknowledges global differences in Internet access while giving all our delegates the opportunity to engage with the conference.
