Overview

Speaker: Professor Simon Humphries (Kansai University)

Without training to help the teachers to adapt, the kosen management introduced communicative English teaching textbooks, which were innovative in this context. In such cases, the question arises: in the absence of teacher training, what factors influence the appropriate use of an innovative textbook?

The presenter observed and interviewed four Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) who used the new textbooks. The JTEs tended to modify the textbooks to fit traditional practices. Based on these findings, we will discuss the challenges of ELT innovation.
