I am a historian of art, visual, and material cultures, specialising in nineteenth-century French painting; ephemera as documents of everyday life; and the history of photography. I take an interest in critical theory, most centrally Marxist and post-Marxist ideology critique; theories of everyday life and modern things (especially Henri Lefebvre, Hannah Arendt, and Walter Benjamin); and philosophico-historiographical debates on time, history, and memory (especially Reinhard Kosselleck, Paul Ricoeur, and François Hartog).

My forthcoming book, Gustave Caillebotte as Worker, Collector, Painter re-interprets the career of this once-forgotten painter by foregrounding his compulsions to work and to collect. My present research examines ephemera—transient, everyday items like postage stamps, paper money, restaurant menus, and lapel flowers—as agents within and documents of modern French everyday life during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I maintain a secondary research interest in the history of photography, specifically nineteenth-century photography and mid-twentieth-century US street photography.

I teach broadly on European art and visual culture in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries; photography from 1839 to the contemporary; critical theory and research methodologies; and art historiography. Before joining Leicester, I taught at the University of Essex, the Courtauld Institute of Art, and the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education.
