Personal details

I am an art historian and a Leicester-Wellcome Trust ISSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow. I specialise in modern and contemporary art, and my research and teaching interests lie especially in the visual arts, health and medicine; feminism; migration; exhibition histories and art pedagogy. I first joined the University of Leicester as a Teaching Fellow in Modern Art in September 2017, having completed my AHRC-funded PhD in History of Art at the University of Birmingham.

  • BA Hons, History of Art, University of Birmingham
  • MRes, History of Art, University of Birmingham (AHRC-funded)
  • PhD in History of Art, University of Birmingham (AHRC-funded)

  • Art Therapy and Modernism in Twentieth-Century Britain and the United States (in progress)

Journal articles and book chapters

  • ‘‘(Un)healthy Minds’ and Visual and Tactile Arts, c.1900-1950’ in Steven J. Taylor and Alice Brumby (eds), Healthy Minds in the Twentieth Century: In and Beyond the Asylums (forthcoming: Palgrave Macmillan, 2019)
  • ‘Exhibiting the Arts in Therapy at the Museum of Modern Art, New York: Rehabilitation and Narratives of Modernism’ (in progress)

During my Leicester-Wellcome Trust ISSF fellowship, I have two main research projects. The first is a book on therapeutic art-making practices and modernism in Britain and the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. Meanwhile, my second project focuses on the sculptural work of Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930-2017), especially in terms of the visceral body, biology and neurology. My research interests more broadly include: the visual arts, health and medicine; feminism; migration; exhibition histories and art pedagogy.

As a Teaching Fellow (2017-19), I convened and taught on the following courses:

  • HA3027 Art Since 1945
  • HA3020 Classical Aesthetics and its Legacy
  • HA2319 and HA2219 Documents of the History of Art
  • HA2218 Modernity and Tradition
  • HA1313 and HA1113 Introduction to History of Art II: Enlightenment to Contemporary
  • HA1315 and HA1115 Film and Art: Academic Study and the Workplace
