The Arch-I-Scan project

Automated recording and machine learning for collating Roman ceramic tablewares and investigating eating and drinking practices

Victoria Szafara is a Research Assistant at the University of Leicester working on the Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded Arch-I-Scan project. Her primary responsibilities within the project include assistance with the data recording programme, recruitment and supervision of volunteers, execution of outreach activities, monitoring of impact evidence, and management of website and social media channels.

Victoria is originally from the United States where she worked as a museum professional, mostly in Education departments, in institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum), and Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Her archaeological background includes fieldwork in England, Italy and southeastern Europe (Romania). In 2017, she was the recipient of an Etruscan Foundation Fieldwork Fellowship for her work at the urban site of Caere (modern Cerveteri). That summer, she was the recipient of a scholarship to attend the American Academy in Rome Classical Summer School. Victoria has also gained post-excavation experience through work at the University of Leicester Archaeological Services.

In addition to her Research Assistant role, Victoria is a first-year postgraduate researcher in the School of Archaeology and Ancient History. Her thesis research is focused on Romano-British brooches, gender and traditions of dress. Her broader research interests include artefact studies (small finds), frontier studies, concepts of ethnicity and identity, the history of antiquities collecting, and cultural heritage presentation and preservation. When she is not studying or working, Victoria is an avid football fan and plays midfield for the SAAH/ULAS football team.
