I completed my undergraduate studies in Archaeology at the University of Leicester and my DPhil at the University of Oxford (British Academy and Linacre College Domus Scholar). I was Fellow in Social Sciences at the University of Durham before joining the School at Leicester.


My research interests include: the history of archaeological thought and method; the archaeology and anthropology of art; the history of archaeological publishing; archaeology and ancient history in education; community archaeology; Roman provincial archaeology and art.


I coordinate and contribute to campus-based and distance learning undergraduate and MA modules in

  • classical and historical archaeology
  • heritage management and archaeology
  • archaeology and ancient history in education

I supervise campus-based and distance-learning MA and PhD students and have undertaken writing, marking and coordination for a wide range of modules within the School's distance learning programme. I was awarded a University Distinguished Teaching Fellowship in 2013 in recognition of teaching excellence. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2017.

Administrative roles

My current roles include

I led the School's successful Athena Swan Bronze Award submission in November 2018. I am academic lead for Clearing in the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

Internship programme: I developed and coordinate our HEAR and CIfA-accredited volunteering and internship programme in partnership with University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) and a wide range of external partners. I am currently working with colleagues in the School of Education to coordinate education-related placements across the University.

Archaeology and Classics in the Community: I collaborate with ULAS and many local arts and heritage organisations, including Leicester Creative Business Depot, Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, the YMCA (Y Heritage) and the Friends of Jewry Wall Museum, to facilitate engagement with local heritage and to provide a wide range of school and community engagement opportunities developed from our academic and field research. I am leading a team of students and staff, working in partnership with Classics for All and local teachers, to support the introduction of archaeology and classical subjects in state schools. Since 2015 we have reached more than 9,000 pupils and are supporting a network of more than 110 schools across the East Midlands. Through a book, resources, and training, our Life in the Roman World programme introduces pupils and teachers to the complex, diverse communities of the Roman world through the prism of Leicestershire's Roman heritage. I am currently writing a guide to the Jewry Wall (Leicester) with Mathew Morris, commissioned by the Friends of the Jewry Wall Museum and Leicester City Council (funded by NLHF); I am an academic advisor for the £15.5M Jewry Wall Museum refurbishment.

Excavation and community engagement: I am leading a team working in partnership with the Chester House Estate to excavate the site of the small Roman town (vicus) of Irchester, and to develop a collaborative community research, learning and engagement programme. The Chester House Estate is a £14.5m project supported by National Lottery Heritage Funds and North Northants Council. I worked closely with the Chester House Estate team and Simon Leach Design to research and write the interpretation for site, which opened October 2021.
