Classical Association Schools Essay Competition

To celebrate the Classical Association Annual Conference, the University of Leicester would like to invite schools to take part in our essay competition.

Successful entries will receive certificates and will be showcased at the university. Additionally selected winners will be offered the chance to attend the 2018 Classical Association Annual Conference and to present their essays at the conference.*

The Competition is open to school students from Year 10 to Year 13 (inclusive).

Essays should be:

  • no more than 2000 words long
  • accompanied by a cover sheet, which can be downloaded from the Resources section below
  • submitted by e-mail to before 18.00 on 25th November 2017.

Credit will be given to essays which include evidence beyond the material set in the syllabus. The judges will award marks for organisation of ideas, clarity of expression and engagement with the sources. The use of images, with captions, is encouraged.

i) life in Pompeii?

j) the fall of the Republic?

k) the rise of Augustus?

l) Imperial power, AD 14-117?

m) women in Roman society?

n) status in Roman society?

Essay competition prizes are Bloomsbury book tokens (can be used on Harry Potter as well as academic books): £150 for the winner, £100 for the runner up, £50 for third place. Winning entries from the Schools’ Essay Competition will be displayed and available to read in the exhibitor’s hall in the Charles Wilson Building.

Conference Information

The CA2018 is a family-friendly conference. A child-friendly room will be available on-campus throughout the conference with facilities for baby-changing and a soft play area. Please be aware however, that we cannot supervise children and a parent or guardian must be present. Parents or guardians are responsible for their children at all times during the conference. If required, there is also a dedicated room for breastfeeding and pumping milk.
