Archaeology and Ancient History

Welcome to the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at Leicester, home to a world-class, international team of scholars engaged in cutting-edge research and teaching.

Our Expertise

The School comprises experts in both Archaeology and Ancient History. Our Archaeologists have particular strengths in prehistoric, Greek, Roman, medieval, historical, landscape, and scientific archaeology while our Ancient Historians specialise in the cultures, landscapes, economies, politics and reception of the Greek and Roman world. Staff in both disciplines collaborate closely, and the Mediterranean world is particularly well covered in our research and teaching.

We are also one of the few academic departments with an on-site, professional archaeological unit. The award-winning University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS), the team that found King Richard III, forms part of the School, and supports our provision of archaeological training.

In 2018, Leicester was ranked 5th in the UK for Forensic Science & Archaeology in the Guardian University League Tables, with an overall score of 90.4%.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, 74% of our research activity, including 100% of our Research Environment, was classed as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', ranking us 6th out of universities that teach Archaeology in the UK. We are also ranked 1st for the public impact of our research.

Our Teaching

We deliver undergraduate and master's teaching to the highest standards, both in campus-based mode and by distance learning. We offer a range of flexible courses which allow students to shape their own degrees, by choosing from a range of core and optional modules, and fieldwork opportunities.

We supervise over 80 Postgraduate Research (PhD) students, both on campus and via distance learning. They have an impressive record of achievement during and beyond their doctoral degree.

Our annual National Student Survey (NSS) feedback indicates outstanding student satisfaction with our courses. In the NSS returns for 2016, we scored 97% overall for our BA in Archaeology and Ancient History, with 100% of our students agreeing that ‘Staff are good at explaining things’ and ‘Staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching’!
