Travel and accommodation

Getting to Rome

By plane

Rome has two main airports: Fiumicino (Leonardo Da Vinci) and Ciampino. Budget airlines tend to fly to/from Ciampino, while longer flights or national airlines tend to go to/from Fiumicino.

There are buses between every 15 and every 30 minutes from the airports to Termini Roma Centrale station, which are operated by various providers (e.g. Terravision)

By train

The main train station is Termini Roma Centrale and is about a 25 minute walk from the conference venue. The Tiburtina station is also close to the venue.

How to get to the conference venue from the train station:

From Termini station, take bus no. 310 (direction Piazza Vescovio) for 5 stops. Get off at the Universita/Regina Elena stop, which is 200 metres from the conference venue.

From Tiburtina station, take the Metro line B (direction Laurentina) for 2 stops. Get off at the Policlinico stop. The conference venue is 850 metres from the metro stop.

Getting around Rome

There are numerous buses in the area, but please note that the frequency varies and they cannot be guaranteed to arrive on time.

There are two metro (tube) lines (A and B, red and blue). The Metro is signposted on the street with “M” signs in red and white. The closest stations are Policlinico (850 metres from the conference venue, about a 10 minute walk) and Bologna (1,100 metres from the conference venue, about 15 minutes walk).

When you are in Rome bus/metro tickets must be bought in advance at newsagents or Tabaccheria (shops with a T sign outside). They cost 1.5 euros each, and the ticket is valid for 100 minutes (or one journey on the metro) and must be validated on the bus or in the metro station.

Taxis are not usually flagged on the street and should be called/booked via phone/app. Alternatively, you can get a taxi at one of the taxi stands dotted around the city, but be aware that prices can be high.

There are convenient apps for transportation and taxis like “it Taxi” (icon in grey with blue writing, plus an Italian flag and map). The number for the largest taxi company is 063570 (06 is the prefix for Roma; +44 is the prefix for Italy).

Avoid taking a cab from the airport as it’s quite expensive: it would be much more sensible to take a cab from Termini station (there is a queue of taxis just outside, make sure you take official ones). The journey from Termini to the Faculty of Economics at La Sapienza costs about 10 euros by taxi.

Getting to the conference location

Please note that La Sapienza University has many buildings in various locations around Rome. This conference is being held in the Faculty of Economics, Management Department, address: Via del Castro Laurenziano 9, 00161, Roma.

Weather and clothing

July is the warmest time of the year in Rome and you can expect temperatures of between 25-32 celsius. You can also expect up to 14 hours of sunshine daily with very little breeze or rain. We have arranged for air conditioning in the conference rooms but please dress accordingly. We also advise that you bring suntan lotion, sunglasses and a hat!

The dress code for the conference is informal, but you may wish to pack something a little more dressy for the gala dinner.
