Induction Guidance: Mentor

Guidance and good practice for the role of the Mentor during induction.

Introduction New starters have reported how they’ve benefited greatly from having early contact with their mentor as part of their induction programme. Therefore, we recommend introducing yourself during your new Mentee’s first week, either by phone, email or in person. Good practice has indicated that it’s important to outline your purpose as a Mentor, the support you will offer and your availability for your Mentee.
First Meeting

We recommend meeting with the new starter during their first month to check they’re settling in well and to see if they have any unanswered questions. This could be over a coffee or a lunch. The University provides guidance on the roles of the Mentor and the Mentee.

The University has recently developed The Coaching and Mentoring Academy to provide further support to Mentors.

Tour of the Campus

New members of staff may welcome the opportunity to explore the campus further, if they haven’t done so already. Therefore, we recommend that Mentors offer to show their new Mentees around the campus, identifying key areas, such as the library and central services.

The Campus Map may help to provide a foundation to your campus tour.

Regular Meetings

Academic members of staff are recommended to meet regularly with their Mentor during their probation period. Feedback has shown how early Mentor support is invaluable for a new starter.

Therefore, we suggest that Mentors meet with their new Mentees at least once a month during their first 3 months of employment to check their progress with induction and to offer any further guidance.
