Employment Contract

In order for your Employee Number and IT Account to be set up ready for your arrival, your contract needs to be signed and returned to central HR before your first day.

If you haven’t done so already, you should sign and return your Contract of Employment as soon as possible to the central HR Recruitment Team.

Your School/ Department

On completion of returning your contract, your School or Department should contact you to discuss the arrangements for your arrival. 
Your School or Department will be able to provide details on:

• Where to go on your first day; access to the building and who to report to
• Your schedule for your first few weeks
• Arrangements for IT and workstation

If you have not heard within 2-3 weeks of your start date please contact either your School/ Departmental Office or your line manager to help with facilitating this.

Walking to the University

The University is approximately a 20 minute walk away from Leicester train station and a 35 minute walk away from Leicester St. Margaret’s Bus Station. There are various entrance points to the campus on University Road, please view our campus map for further information.

Travelling by car

If you’re travelling by car and require on-site parking, your School or Department may be able to arrange a Visitor’s Parking Permit for your first day, please contact your School/ Departmental Office for further information on a Visitor's Parking Permit. Thereafter, you will need to make your own parking arrangements. If you wish to park on-site, you will need to apply for a parking permit. You will need a University IT account to apply for a parking permit.

Travelling by bus

The University of Leicester is situated on many bus routes.

Travelling by bike

The University encourages sustainable travel and has dedicated Bike Parks on campus.

Travelling by air

The nearest airport to the University of Leicester is East Midlands Airport. There is a bus service which travels from East Midlands Airport to Leicester St. Margaret’s Bus Station. You can travel by rail from Luton, Stansted and Birmingham Airports to Leicester. For further information on travelling by air, please visit the interactive campus map.

Travelling by taxi

The University has recommended taxi companies for staff to use. For more information, please visit the Taxi Service (local and airport) webpage (log in required). Alternatively, please contact your School/ Departmental Office for further help.

Office and Workstation

Requesting reasonable adjustments

If you require reasonable adjustments to support you at work, you can download a DSE workstation pre-assessment form from our website. Please complete and return this form to your departmental DSE Assessor or your School Administrator.

Your School Administrator will then notify your departmental DSE Assessor and your line manager. To find out who your School Administrator is, please contact your School/ Departmental Office.

Issuing of ID cards

If you’re on-site for your first day, you will need to collect your ID card from the Security Lodge situated on main campus. You will need to have a University IT account to be issued an ID card. If you’re not based on campus for your first week of induction, your School or Department may be able to help with issuing your ID card.

Employee Self Service

You can access and edit some of the data from your central staff record through the University’s Employee Self Service (ESS). You can also view your payslips and manage your sickness absence and annual leave requests. If you’re a line manager, you will also have access to your team’s structure. Requesting software training

As a member of staff, you will be required to use specific software. Examples of software include Blackboard, Sharepoint and Outlook. The University offers IT training to all staff, find out more about training opportunities.

Moving your books and journals to the University

The University may be able to help with moving your books, journals and research to your new office. This needs to be approved by your Head of Department. For further help, please contact your School/ Departmental Office.

Places to eat on campus

The University has a range of cafés and places to eat on campus that sell a vast selection of food. You can also download the UPay Chilli payment system app to receive loyalty points when you buy food and drink from any Here for U campus outlet.

Help with childcare

The University of Leicester Nursery is located via the Danielle Brown Sports Centre and is available for staff and students to use. Spaces can be limited, so please contact the nursery in advance.
