STEM Foundation Year

The STEM Foundation Year is an integral part of a longer degree course, rather than a stand-alone qualification. It will give you the fundamental skills needed to continue straight onto the first year of one of our STEM degrees, laying the foundations for a successful career in your chosen field.

The course focuses on a core curriculum of maths and physical sciences that is a necessary foundation for successful study at degree level. You will cover relevant A-level material with a strong emphasis on developing professional and personal skills that are necessary for a university course and beyond.

Completing the STEM Foundation Year can be a real attribute to your overall degree success. It not only opens doors to courses that may have previously looked closed, but also provides a sound base on which to establish a successful academic career.

Fees and funding

Each of our STEM Foundation courses runs for four years: the STEM Foundation Year followed by the three years of the BSc (or BEng). The standard £9,250 tuition fee applies to each of the four years. As with any other degree, you will not pay your tuition fees up front but will be eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan which you will start paying back when you earn a salary above a certain threshold.

The University of Leicester offers two scholarships for students with high A-level grades and/or low household incomes. You will be eligible for these scholarships if you meet the criteria.

How to apply

You should apply for your chosen degree 'with Foundation Year' through UCAS, using the codes listed above. Once you have successfully completed the STEM Foundation Year you will automatically progress onto the first year of the relevant degree.

NB. Our STEM Foundation courses are open to applicants from the UK and other EU countries.
