Mathematical and Computational Biology

Contact: Prof Sergei Petrovskii, Mathematics, and Dr Nir Piterman, Computer Science

Mathematical biology at Leicester is represented by broad field of research in ecological complexity (Petrovskii, Morosov, Gorban), Neural networks and Mathematical neuroscience (Gorban, Tyukin, Levesley), Biochemical networks and macromolecules (Brilliantov, Gorban), Ecological physiology and Dynamics of adaptation (Gorban). Research can be found within the Mathematical Ecology Group and the Dynamics of Complex Systems Group.

All these applied topics are linked to the mathematical research at the Department of Mathematics: Dynamics of complex systems, Numerical analysis and Scientific computing, Computational fluid dynamics and Mathematical modelling. The international network of scientific collaboration is large and includes many leading institutions of the world: Institut Curie in Paris, France, RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI) in Japan, The Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS), Bures-sur-Yvette, France, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, NY, USA, Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch, Russia, Osnabrueck University, Germany, and many other centres.

Mathematical Modelling Centre

Founded in 1999, the University of Leicester's Centre for Mathematical Modelling (MMC) unites researchers with shared interests in advanced modelling and simulation methods. Cutting across traditional disciplinary boundaries, the MMC uses advanced mathematical tools and simulation methods to model complex biological processes with particular emphasis on the brain. The MMC also coordinates shared high performance computing resources for the University of Leicester.
