Biography

Vascular Surgery has always been at the forefront of academic surgery with a high proportion of consultants having previously undertaken research degrees.  Leicester in particular has a very strong track record in vascular research and has been the instigator of many of today's vascular work practices throughout the UK.

Mr McCarthy originally did his medical degree in Birmingham, was an anatomy demonstrator there and undertook his early years of surgical training in the main Birmingham teaching hospitals.  Having obtained a training number in General Surgery, he was keen to pursue an academic career in vascular surgery and realised that Leicester was very research active, with multiple publications in vascular journals.  Having contracted the then Professor of Surgery (Sir Professor Peter Bell) Mr McCarthy embarked upon a PhD in the vascular laboratories in Leicester's Robert Kilpatrick Clinical Sciences Building, being supervised by Professor Nick Brindle.  His project was based around angiogenesis and the study of how blood vessels grow.  After obtaining some pilot data he was privileged to be able to take up a Wellcome Research Fellowship which secured funding for his PhD, which he was successful in being awarded in 1999.

Mr McCarthy returned back into surgical training as a Lecturer in Surgery, which enabled him to continue his research interests.  Having completed his surgical training in the East Midlands, he became a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Leicester in 2003.  Over the last 13 years he has pursued his main interest of medical education and was the Director of several Royal College of Surgeons based courses (Basic Surgical Skills and CCrlSP).  This interest resulted in him becoming Training Programme Director of Core Surgical Training in the East Midlands for three years and subsequently he was appointed as Head of the School of Surgery in the East Midlands in 2012.  Mr McCarthy also an elected council member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland and also sits on the committee of the Vascular Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) and have run National Recruitment in my specialty for three consecutive years.

As the Head of School of Surgery in the East Midlands and has been involved in Clinical Lecturer and Academic Clinical Fellow appointments and has actively encouraged surgical trainees to undertake research projects.  He has a clear knowledge and understanding of the clinical academics in the generality of surgery within Leicester.
