Biography

Elaine Boyle is an Associate Professor in Neonatal Medicine at the University of Leicester, and Honorary Consultant Neonatologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust. She is the Specialty Lead for Children’s Research in the East Midlands Clinical Research Network, Joint Lead for Women’s and Children’s Research in UHL and Research Lead for the Central Newborn Network.

Elaine initially trained and worked as a nurse for a number of years before studying medicine at the University of Sheffield, qualifying as a doctor in 1993. She completed postgraduate training in paediatrics in Sheffield and Birmingham. Before taking up her current appointment in Leicester in 2006, she trained in academic neonatal medicine in Edinburgh and at McMaster University, Canada. During this time she gained an MD for work on the assessment and management of pain in the newborn, an MSc in Epidemiology, and a PhD focused on enteral feeding in preterm neonates. She remains active in each of these areas of research. Her current major research interest is the effects of gestational age at birth on neonatal and childhood outcomes, and in particular the effects of moderate-late preterm birth. She was the lead for the LAMBS - Late And Moderately preterm Birth Study, one of the first large population-based studies in this area.

Elaine regards research as an integral and vital part of the high quality care offered to patients and families and is keen to see all junior doctors play an active part in research. She is keen to support trainees who wish to become involved in research at any level, from participating in recruitment to multicentre trials to developing research ideas or undertaking more formal studies for a postgraduate degree. In addition to the formal academic training posts, research opportunities exist in a number of areas of paediatrics and neonatal medicine. Particular academic strengths within the speciality are paediatric respiratory research, neonatal clinical research and perinatal and paediatric epidemiological research.

Please feel free to contact Elaine (eb124@le.ac.uk) if you would like more information or if you wish to discuss ideas, opportunities or potential ways to incorporate research into your career.
