Dr Azhar was appointed as a full-time primary care physician (clinical partner) at Danes Camp and Medical Centre in 2006, where he has been a senior partner since 2011.  He is actively involved in research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training for many years. Dr Azhar led his Practice to become one of the very few primary care centers in the county to be accredited as a research hub; active in commercial and non-commercial portfolio studies, teaching and training practice. Incorporating research, teaching, and training as one of the core strategies for overall service development enabled him to turn around the practice. He is the clinical director of Diabetes and Primary Care Research for Northampton Research Centre, clinical director of General Practice Alliance (GP Federation), clinical director of R&D chair of Research Forum in Northamptonshire. A significant remit of his role is to teach/educate primary care colleagues across the country. He is GP trainer and faculty member of Leadership and Management Academy of Health Education Board East Midlands(HEEM). He teaches GP Registrars for the preparation of CSA and AKT and GP tutor for year 6 Medical students from Imperial College London, Leicester Medical school and Buckingham Medical School. Dr Azhar has been actively involved in developing Obesity management e-learning module for Omni Media and has written a chapter on prevention of CVD risks in diabetes mellitus in an RCGP book with a title “Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. 1st ed. UK: RCGP; 2009. P 27-78”. He is not only involved in teaching GP colleagues, medical students, and GP Specialist Registrars but also involved in multi-professional education. His area of special interest is diabetes and primary care research, and he works with the Leicester Diabetes Centre as a senior clinical research fellow. He leads an innovative project to know the barriers in the management of type 2 diabetes in primary care by doing a collaborative project with primary care clinicians, commissioners and people with type 2 diabetes. He is an appraiser of Central Midlands Area Team and has completed the REAL (Revalidation Enabled Appraisal and Learning) training module.
