Here at the College of Life Sciences we have long recognised the importance of engaging with the public, not only to enhance and inform our research and teaching, but also to strive to make a real and positive impact on the wider community.

Researchers within the College have a strong reputation for engaging with the public on a local, national and international level, with outreach activities and direct engagement with more than 17000 people over the last two years alone. Additionally, our academics have reached even larger audiences by making regular contributions through media outlets such as television, radio, newspaper and lay journal articles, as well as presenting expertise to specialist science programmes.

Our wide ranging engagement activities have included:

  • Accessible resources for schools, educators and the general public for science demonstrations and activities
  • Botanical Gardens with free public and schools' access, Family Fun Days and Sculpture Exhibitions
  • Collaborative contribution to high profile Richard III events
  • Working with local communities and charities, e.g. CRUK, Centre for Ethnic Health Research
  • Contributions to National Events such as the Big Bang Fair, British Science Week, Space School UK and Brain Awareness Week
  • Joint educational events at local museums and exhibition centres
  • Master classes and taster classes for adults and children
  • Media Engagement
  • Open days at our NIHR Biomedical Research Units, on campus and at our UHL sites
  • Patient group talks
  • Public lectures and talks
