Data to Knowledge for Practice (DKP) Facility

The DKP holds regular technical meetings:  Bioinformatics/Informatics Technical (BIT) meeting

The DKP group constitutes a strategic initiative by the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology that directly links with various University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) teams to optimise andDKP Logo synergise activities relating to ‘Knowledge Engineering and Data Management’ in research and healthcare settings. It involves experts in areas such as bioinformatics, medical informatics, computer technology, epidemiology, and biostatistics, with roles in major national and international studies. Consolidating such key expertise provides Leicester’s researchers and healthcare professionals with a focus for discussion, advice, innovation and collaboration, to drive forward our progress in advanced biomedicine.

A “hub” for the DKP Facility is located on one floor of the Cardiovascular Research Centre at the Glenfield Hospital, providing shared space for co-location and close interaction between various contributing groups and invited external experts. This University of Leicester/BHF research building, positioned in the heart of a UHL hospital, enables multidisciplinary stakeholders in the DKP to interact closely, with temporary space for additional visitors and collaborators from academia and industry.

Teams actively engaged with the DKP come from the Department of Genetics, the Department of Health Sciences, the NIHR Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit, the NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit, and the NIHR Leicester-Loughborough Lifestyle Biomedical Research Unit. Engagement with University IT Services, UHL IT services, and IBM is also strong. Various staff from these groups take an active part in guiding DKP development, with day-to-day coordination provided by the DKP Director, Professor Anthony Brookes.

Current teams tapping into the DKP:

- Prof Anthony Brookes

- Prof Raymond Dalgleish

Example projects tapping into the DKP include:

Bioinformatics/Informatics Technical (BIT) meeting

The regular BIT meeting aims to foster greater collaboration between different research informatics groups and projects.  The meetings provide an informal discussion forum to cover technical aspects of bioinformatics and biomedical informatics including:

- Programming/software development and deployment
- Data management and system administration
- Assistance and advice/support to group members with specific problems
- Feedback on initial informatics ideas and project designs
- Presentations of novel technical work or approaches
- Pooling of previous developments that could be reused in new projects
- Identifying funding opportunities/synergies where groups could work together

Anyone involved with, or who has an interest in, the technical aspects of research informatics based in Leicester is welcome to attend.
