Dr Rufai receiving 1st prize

Dr Sohaib Rufai, NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Ophthalmology, was awarded the Registrar's Prize at the joint Kettering-Midlands Ophthalmological Society Annual Meeting on Friday 10 March 2017.

The prize was awarded for the best oral presentation, judged by Professor Philip Murray (Birmingham) and Professor Harminder Dua (Nottingham). Dr Rufai competed amongst ten presenters and received £100 prize money.

The winning presentation was titled "Can grading foveal hypoplasia in infants using handheld optical coherence tomography predict future visual acuity? A longitudinal cohort study" and focused on the use of our hand-held OCT technology which Leicester was the first centre in Europe to use.

Dr Rufai said,

It was a great privilege to present this study to a large audience of experienced ophthalmologists in the midlands. To my surprise I was awarded first prize, which was most humbling. I would like to thank my supervisor Professor Irene Gottlob, my research team and our wonderful patients, without whom none of this promising work would be possible.
