In June 2017, Dr Sohaib Rufai (NIHR ACF in Ophthalmology 2016-2019) was awarded the Registrar's Prize for Best Oral Presentation and he received £200 prize money.

He won the prize for his presentation on his work within The University's Ulverscroft Eye Unit conducting the world's first longitudinal cohort study using a modified grading system for the underdevelopment of infants' retinas. Leicester’s pioneering technique uses a handheld optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner to produce ultra-high resolution 3D images of infants' eyes.

He said:

I was delighted to win the Registrar's Prize at the Paediatric and World Ophthalmology Meeting in Sheffield, for delivering a presentation on our exciting OCT research in Leicester. The credit goes to my wonderful team headed by Professor Irene Gottlob. We hope this research continues to benefit patients worldwide.
